History of Ghostbusters from GhostCorps

I am of the generation that grew up with the original Ghostbusters. I remember seeing it in the theater more than once and loving the one-liners as well as the blowing up that darn Stay Puff Marshmallow Man. Now that Sony Pictures, Ivan Reitman, and Ghost Corps we have an all-female cast and a new Ghostbusters for the next generation. I was invited to visit Ghost Corps during the GhostBloggers event to learn about the history of the film and even where had some time to talk to Ivan about his beloved franchise.

The original Ghostbusters was written by Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis and produced and directed by Ivan Reitman. Here’s a look at the original with Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler), Dan Ackroyd (Raymond Stanz) and Bill Murray (Peter Venkman).

Ivan talked about what age would be appropriate for the new film because of what happened with the original.

We never thought of the first one as a kid’s movie or family movie. So it was very surprising how well it did. June the 8th, 1984 it was number 1 every week that summer except one.

We heard that parents were bringing their kids to the movie, and we never considered it to be a children’s film. I particularly thought it was pretty scary. And now it’s one of those movies that adults want to show their kids, and it’s become this family movie.

I think what young kids got out of the first film is that kids are scared of ghosts. The thought of dying, you know, those sort of issues, there was something about the fact that the Ghostbusters were able to contain the ghosts and keep them under control. They weren’t afraid of them; that somehow made the issue more reasonable with kids. I mean, people brought their 4 and 5-year-olds to the movie, and that surprised me. I am curious as to what the audience will be for this film.

The humor and the role models of the four new women are so in charge, and they are a lovely combination of characters.

Ivan continued to share about the formation of GhostCorps.

When it was clear I wouldn’t be directing another Ghostbusters with the loss of Harold Ramis, as well as Bill Murray’s further obstinance of making another one; I wouldn’t be making another one. Even though we even had a funny script with a passing the torch sequel. So about a year and a half ago we worked it out that Sony now has control of this wonderful idea. And GhostCorps was created to expand the Ghostbusters idea.

Do you have any creative control on the new Ghostbusters?

Involvement, but not control.
