Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Review

I love movies that make me laugh!  I am a sucker for a love story, and I like being in suspense, but make me laugh, really laugh, and I pretty much love the movie.  Good thing Steve Carrel is funny right?  Now add Jennifer Garner, and 3 amazing kid actors and you have a family movie that everyone, young and old will love.

Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom (Jennifer Garner), dad (Steve Carell), brother (Dylan Minnette) and sister (Kerris Dorsey) all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn’t had one. “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” directed by Independent Spirit Award-winner Miguel Arteta (“The Good Girl,” “Cedar Rapids,” “Youth in Revolt”) from a screenplay by Rob Lieber, is a 21 Laps Entertainment/Jim Henson Company production.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Review

Having read the book more times than I can count to the girls when they were younger, I was curious as to how true to the book this movie could be.   Well, they kept true to the story, but of course to make a movie, it was elaborated a bit.  With the perfect cast, you will laugh, and you may as a parent cringe a few times for as crazy as this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day is, the lesson in the end is one the whole family can embrace.

Steve Carell as the dad, Ben Cooper.

BEN COOPER, unemployed for seven months, is an upbeat stay at home dad hoping to rejoin the ranks of the employed. But his huge job interviewgoes awry when the babysitter falls through and he’s  forced to bring baby Trevor with him and that’s just  the beginning of his own very bad day. A die hard optimist, Ben finds his sunny disposition pushed to the limit.

Jennifer Garner as the mom, Kelly Cooper.

KELLY COOPER, super mom, is a force of nature.  Shouldering the breadwinning duties for the family, she secretly craves more time with her family. She starts her terrible day behind schedule, which is just the beginning of a host of missteps, culminating in a desperate attempt to battle a potentially career ending publishing blunder.

ANTHONY COOPER is Alexander’s big brother, and a “total winner” in the eyes of just about everyone.  The successful teen pretty much has it made in life just ask him till his bad day strikes and his reflection reveals what may be his first zit ever.  His perfect life continues to unravel highlighted by a driving test that doesn’t really go as planned.

Kerris Dorsey and sister Emily Cooper

EMILY COOPER is Alexander’s sister, is an aspiring actress who’s looking forward to her debut as Peter Pan in the school play.  But the biggest day of her middle school life is threatened by a horrible cold, so she turns to cough medicine again and again and again.  Flying while on cough syrup is definitely not recommended.

Elise and Zoe Vargas as Baby Trevor

BABY TREVOR COOPER even suffers a bad day no Cooper is spared when his beloved bumblebee pacifier is unwittingly destroyed. Trevor finds little solace in a green marker, despite valiant efforts.

I love the the line, “You’ve gotta have the bad days to love the good days even more!”  Go see Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day!  I promise you will really enjoy it!  Your whole family will!
