Exploring the Outskirts of San Diego

One of the things I love about California is the way the terrain changes so much in the blink of an eye. Whether it’s the hills of San Francisco, the fertile wine country of Napa Valley, or my west coast home haze over of Los Angeles, I love California. I recently visited San Diego for the first time to do a little mystery drive in Southern California with two of my closest friends, Kas and Kristy, during a fun press event introducing Kia’s 2017 Sportage.

Exploring the Outskirts of San Diego

Starting point was the Hard Rock Hotel and the rest of our mystery drive was planned by our friends at Kia. We didn’t know much about where we were going, other than we were going to take some awesome photos along the way.

I knew that the drive was going to be beautiful, and it was, but it was also so much fun! One of our first stops was at Julian Pie Company. I am an all American kind of girl, and I mean, who doesn’t love some hot apple pie with some vanilla ice cream? But seriously, just an hour outside of San Diego is Julian, the only place in Southern California that gets cold enough to grow apples. Crazy fun fact, during season, it’s common for the Julian Pie Company to make 2,000 pies a DAY!

After devouring more than the “just a bite” of one of the most amazing slices of pie, we headed to our next stop where we would explore Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and take some photos with the Galleta Meadows Sculptures. The views were amazing!

Along the way we grabbed some photos at the Montezuma Valley Market, where we were greeted by this lovely Sasquatch.

We stumble upon the St. Richard Catholic Church. Borrego Springs is so beautiful, in the middle of the desert surrounded by mountains.

Saw this beautiful church stranded in the middle of the desert last week. #fbf #discoversportage #travel #desert

We then played in the Galleta Meadows, Borrego Desert where we took some fun shots with the metal statues. We also learned a lesson about Jumping Cholla Cactus – read about that on Kristy’s post as she had a horrible experience that may save you if you ever encounter one of those suckers.

After getting some fun photos and far away from those Jumping Cholla Cacti, we headed to lunch at the La Casa del Zorro, which was delicious!

We finished off our day with a fun video challenge (we took second!). I hope when you do a little exploring outside of the San Diego area, you hit these must see spots as well!

* I was invited by Kia to attend their #DiscoverSportage media event to go on an experience in the 2017 Kia Sportage. All opinions are my own.
