Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 D23 Interview

While at D23 Expo last month we had a press junket that included a mysterious “Josh Snow, President of the D23 Exhibit” on our itinerary. I did a quick Google search and found nothing, so I was fine with the “more details to come”. Well little did we know that Josh Snow was really Karen Gillan (“Nebula”) & Pom Klementieff (“Mantis”) of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 D23 interview. The girls sat down with us and talked about the excitement of being part of D23, a new experience for Pom, as well as the release of the film to digital, Bluray and DVD.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 D23 Interview

Wow, the reception the cast of Avengers Infinity War received on stage today was amazing!

Karen: Oh, it was amazing.

Pom: It was incredible, yeah. I mean, I think it was 7,000 people.

Karen: That was you guys. You were really loud. I mean, it felt electric to have like 7,000 people passionate about something that you’re involved with in some way, and it’s just like totally different sensations to anything I’ve ever experienced. It felt electric.

We saw footage from the film today, is this the first time that you guys saw the footage?

Pom: No, actually we saw it a few days ago on set. They showed it to us.

Karen: Yeah, which was cool.

What is it like for you being a part of the Marvel ride?

Pom: Ah, that’s really fun.

Karen: I want to go on it.

Pom: You have to maybe not eat too much before because it will be like up and down, it’s like your organs like are lifted up and then come down. Yeah, it’s really crazy.  It’s safe because you stay in the seat. You don’t actually, you know, you can’t fall, but it’s just, oh, it’s amazing. And it’s really fun with the–the story that James, James Gunn wrote. And you see, um, you know, you see the collector, Benicio Del Toro, and it’s really fun. I’m really happy to be a part of it. I’m wanted, right?

How is it different working with the directors of Infinity War Russo Brothers versus Guardians’ Director James Gunn?

Karen: Interesting, like we had to adapt, I guess, because we’ve only ever made anything Guardians related with James Gunn, and he created these characters. It was very much a collaboration with James in terms of bringing these characters to life. So then to sort of work with completely new directors was a different sensation, but it was also cool because they have something else to add to the table, another perspective on everything

Pom: I was kind of scared at the beginning because we have a great relationship with James Gunn, and he’s an amazing director and he’s really close to his actors. We created this character together, so how is it going to be to work with someone else. Am I gonna do the right things, you know? So it was kind of like a little bit stressed out, but actually, when we’re on set, it went really great, you know, and they’re really…

Karen: They’re amazing.

Since last time we spoke before the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and now with the in-home release, how do you feel about the reception of your fans?

Karen: I feel like it’s been received really well by the fans, and I felt like, when we were making it definitely felt like we were making something special. Everyone was delivering and it just felt like everything that was so good about the first film was kind of amplified in the second film. So I feel like we took it to the next level. And it would seem that the fans agree with that which is always the most important thing, so that’s cool.

What do you feel about being able to inspire change and to empower women who look up to female superhereos?

Karen: I feel like it’s about time. I mean, we’ve been craving this for a long time, and with everyone in the Marvel Universe, and also Wonder Woman, I mean, it’s just like it feels like there’s a real movement of strong different types of women.

Pom: And Captain Marvel, too. I can’t wait. You can see the bad ass and really strong characters like Karen’s character or like my character, she’s more innocent and weird and, you know, it’s okay to be either of these characters.

Karen: Yeah, like not every woman needs to be like kick ass and stern.

Pom: Yeah, exactly, and what I love is also the costumes that we wear. They’re not too revealing or too sexy. It’s great because sometimes in superhero movies, it’s like oh, you’re gonna wear a bikini and fight. Ah, okay. It doesn’t really make sense, you know. So, yeah.
