Meet Actress Alana Cavanaugh

It was just a little over a year ago that I met adorable actress, Alana Cavanaugh.  She was part of a project I was working on called Hotel Divorce.  As soon as I met Alana I knew she was a special kid.  So smart, funny, and professional beyond her years.  When I heard she has a role in the upcoming movie Dolphin Tale 2, I wanted to catch up with her and introduce her to my readers.

Now age 7 and very excited about the upcoming release of Dolphin Tale 2 on Sept. 12th, Alana talks about how she got the role and what is coming up for her next.

Wow, Dolphin Tale 2 – that is so exciting Alana, how did you get the part?

I auditioned for another part and got a callback.  They asked me to do the role of the toddler instead.  It was fun.

Alanas official badge and her first day filming. This stuffed dolphin was given to her by her “sister” from Love Undead which she was filming when she booked DT2.

Tell me about your role.

I play a toddler.  I can’t tell anymore, you will have to watch the movie.:-)

“Our family was treated to a very special day by David Yates of CMA. They truly are all about rescue, rehabilitation and release. We <3 Clearwater Marine Aquarium.”

Did you get some time to hang out with Winter while not filming?

I got to meet Winter 2 times.  One day at lunch, the trainers took me down to meet her because she kept following me when I was filming and was doing her “ weedy bird” sound to me.  Then on the last day we were there, my family and I got to have a special tour and meet Winter and Hope.  It was the best day because my sister got to meet them too.

What is your favorite memory from shooting Dolphin Tale 2?

My favorite part was the last day when we got to meet (the dolphins) Winter and Hope.  I also loved meeting Cozi and Nathan and Mr. Austin Stowell.  I also loved the director Mr. Charles Martin Smith. He was funny and really nice.

Oh and, I had my first loose tooth on set.  Just in case it fell out or wiggled too much, make up had denture stuff.  It was funny.

How long have you been acting?

I have been acting since I was 5.

What type of character is your favorite type to play?

I love playing Haley Clark on Halt and Catch Fire.  She is a typical fun little kid.

How do you prepare for your role?

I practice my lines and talk about it with my mom and dad.

I love to play with my friends, surf and anything fun.  I also love to play with my little sister.

What projects are next for you?

At the end of the month I am shooting Book of Nightmares with Writer/Director Rick Danford.  I play the lead “Sophie”.  I am also excited that Halt and Catch Fire was renewed for a second season.

Inspired by true events, Dolphin Tale 2 was filmed at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the non-profit rescue and rehabilitation facility that Winter calls home. It is now also home to Hope, the baby dolphin that was rescued the very night of the first film’s wrap party. As the cast, filmmakers, crew and CMA staff celebrated the completion of photography on Dolphin Tale, CMA received word of a baby dolphin that had been rescued and was on its way to the facility, though she was so young there were fears she would not survive the trip. When the van carrying the newly named Hope arrived at CMA, several members of the cast and filmmaking team were on hand to witness her being hand carried to the pool—a scene closely re-created in the film. Hope not only survived but, thanks to the efforts of the CMA team, thrived. Like Winter, Hope can never be released to the wild, as she was too young to have learned the life skills necessary for survival. Instead, the two dolphins have formed their own small “pod” and become part of the family at CMA, where they inspire visitors from all over the globe.

Dolphin Tale 2 will be out in theaters on Friday, September 12th.  You can find out more about Dolphin Tale 2 on their Facebook Page and website.
