Aladdin

Last night my daughter Madi and I went to a screening of Disney’s Aladdin 2019. She is 19, so when the original animation was released 8 years before she was born. While we were driving to the theater she said she was trying to remember the 1992 version. I quickly gave her sound bites of A Friend Like Me and A Whole New World, and she gave me a…”yeah-I-remember”, look, with me not really sure that I am believing her, even if that VHS tape was worn out!

Aladdin

A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, “Aladdin” is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s “Aladdin.” The film stars Will Smith as the Genie; Mena Massoud as Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine;Marwan Kenzari as Jafar; Navid Negahban as the Sultan; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia and Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders.

Aladdin and Jasmine

Mena Massoud plays Aladdin. Those eyes, that smile, and did you see his dimples? He is charming, adorable, and he has a great voice. However, it’s Naomi Scott playing Jasmine that steals the scenes. She is drop-dead beautiful, but her voice rivals the rest of the cast.

Jiggy Genie?

So, let’s just say, this isn’t the original. Will Smith himself knew taking on the role of the Genie would be automatically compared to the late Robin Williams version in the original. When we were leaving, I mentioned to Madi that Smith’s version of the genie was a very Fresh Prince of Bel Air like vibe. Totally got jiggy with his version of A Friend Like Me. Then I found this clip from Ellen where he shares how that is exactly what he wanted to portray.

The movie is fun, family-friendly and even though I am a bigger fan of the original, I am glad I saw it. We laughed, a lot. If you can hang out until the Genie comes into the picture (about halfway through), you will think it was an entertaining 2 hours.
